Great Places to Enjoy Canoeing and Kayaking Around Hattiesburg

There are several activities you can enjoy during the summertime. Canoeing and kayaking around Hattiesburg and its nearby creeks and rivers are some of them. In fact, there’s no better way to cool off on a hot summer’s day than drifting down one of Mississippi’s wild and scenic rivers. These are the best places near our apartments in Hattiesburg to get started on your river adventure!

Okatoma Outdoor Post

Okatoma Outdoor Post is just 15 minutes north of Hattiesburg. It is also one of the most convenient locations for getting into the water if your time is limited. Founded back in 1977 on Okatoma Creek with just 15 canoes, it now boasts over 600 canoes and kayaks. That’s not all! This outdoor outfitter also offers campsites, cabins, portages, as well as a small general store. Daily and overnight boat rental fees are very reasonable as well as include life jackets. To secure your boat, be sure to make a reservation!

Black Creek Canoe Rentals

You can find Black Creek Canoe Rentals on Black Creek within the Desoto National Forest. Black Creek is a National Wild and Scenic Stream. Any trip on Black Creek will present plenty of opportunities to enjoy Mississippi nature at its finest. Despite its name, it offers a wide selection of kayaks as well as canoes for rent. You can choose from any of their recommended trips ranging from a 5 mile, 3 1/2 hour gentle excursion to a 29 mile, 14 hour, 3-day overnight adventure. All trips require reservations. Take note that car shuttle services are also available!

Canoe and Trail Outpost

Try your hand at navigating a slightly challenging watercourse! Magee’s Creek is a relatively narrow, rocky creek with plenty of obstacles as well as a few sandbars for relaxing. The upside is you will likely be able to enjoy the natural beauty of this 3 1/2 hour run in near-complete solitude. Canoe and Trail Outpost is the local canoe and kayak outfitter for this creek trip. It caters primarily to groups of tubers who want to float down the broad and lazy Bogue Chitto River. Magee’s Creek, however, is perfect if you prefer canoeing and kayaking away from the crowds with a few technical challenges along the way.
